IELTS Writing 12 Topics Sample #2/12 : Crime 07

In most countries, prison is an effective solution for the problem of crime. Some people hink a more effective solution is to provide a better education.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Putting criminals in jail is accepted as an effective way of solving crimes in many countries. However, some people hold the view that education is a better solution. From my point of view, how to deal with lawbreakers depends on what crimes they make and why they commit crimes.

To those who commit petty crimes due to lack of education and awareness of law. it is a more effective solution to provide proper education to them. After all, the focus should be on making them better citizens rather than punishing them for ignorance and i believe these people deserve a second chance. If they can learn skills and knowledge from correctional programs they will have the ability to find jobs and contribute to the society in a positive way.

However, it is a must to send criminals that committed serious crimes deliberately to prison and give them enough time to self-reflect and get them punished physically. Only in this way can we ensure a safe living environment for law-abiding citizens and sustain social stability. Moreover, it is the best deterrent to potential criminals and scare off the would-be criminals. Most importantly, it is a spiritual consolation to the victims.

To sum up, prison or education, this is a question that deserves to be thoroughly considered by authorities. To some criminals, we provide education and show compassion and most will be able to have a new start. To others, putting into prison can help them deeply think through their sins and make a fresh start.
