IELTS Writing 12 Topics Sample #5/12 : Education 03

Some people believe that parents have great influence on children’s growth but others think that influence from the outside plays a more important role.
Do you agree or disagree?

Parents are the first teacher of their children and they are believed to exert a great influence on their children’s development, while I would argue that the influence from the outside world is much stronger.

The influence coming from parents can have a long-lasting impact on young children. Parents are responsible for teaching them good manners and languages, and children will imitate parents’ behavior unconsciously. If the parents use bad language in their daily life, their children are likely to talk in a rude way. If the parents get along with neighbors and other relatives, their children tend to treat others in a friendly way. Besides, bad habits that children have developed from a very young age are difficult to be corrected, and this is why family education plays an important role in children’s early development.

Unfortunately, the influence from the outside is of greater importance for children’s later development. Some children are quite selfish before they start school, but they are able to get rid of this poor quality later because of peer pressure at school. Once they have learnt the right interpersonal skills at school, they may not revert back to their old self again even if they have self-centered parents. On the other hand, some children may be only polite at home. Their personalities will be quite different once they are with their misbehaved friends. Social environment will certainly change the way children see the world and the way they interact with others.

In conclusion, although the influence exerted by their parents can have lasting impact on children’s growth, the outside influence plays a more important role for their development
