The advent of the Internet introduces more learning opportunities to children and even threaten the popularity of traditional education. I believe that online courses and traditional way of teaching can be compatible with each other.
Traditional teaching conducted by teachers in a brick and mortar school cannot be replaced by computers. Many teachers have received professional training from educational institutions where they learn systematic teaching methods. They are also equipped with hands-on teaching experience that helps them tailor teaching for different students. Compared with computer-based teaching, teachers spend more time with students, so they will further discover the strengths and weaknesses of these students, including non-academic aspects. For example, the younger generation’s inappropriate behavior will be immediately corrected and their good deeds will be praised, through which they are more likely to act in a socially acceptable way.
On the other hand, Internet and computers enable students to find more learning resources not only from their own countries but also from other countries. They can learn different languages and interesting courses based on their own needs. Learning is no longer negative and passive, instead it can transform students into active learners.
In my opinion, traditional schooling and teachers carry the same weight as computers. Even though teachers can solve students’ behavioral problems, they are unable to impart knowledge to students 24 hours. While computers provide non-stop service children can search the information whenever they want and wherever they are. Of course, there is no guarantee that children only learn from appropriate information from the internet.
In conclusion both traditional ways of teaching and computers play an important role in the young’s studying life and I think these two ways of learning should be combined.
